History

1892 — 1901

From establishment to their first league title

Liverpool F.C. was established in 1892 following a disagreement between the Everton committee and John Houlding, who was the club president and owner of Anfield stadium. Everton relocated to Goodison Park, and Houlding founded Liverpool F.C. Originally, it was named "Everton F.C. and Athletic Grounds Ltd," but the club became Liverpool F.C. in March 1892 and gained official recognition a few months later. Liverpool played their first match on September 1, 1892, which they won 7-1 against Rotherham Town. The club quickly rose through the ranks, entering the Football League Second Division in the 1893-94 season and achieving their first league title in 1901 under manager Tom Watson.

Victories and hardships

The club's early success was followed by periods of victory and hardship. Liverpool won consecutive league championships in 1922 and 1923 but did not secure another trophy until the 1946-47 season, winning the First Division for the fifth time under George Kay's management. The team suffered relegation to the Second Division in the 1953-54 season and faced struggles.

1962 — 1973

A turning point with Bill Shankly

However, Bill Shankly's appointment as manager marked a turning point. Shankly's visionary leadership transformed the team, leading to their promotion to the First Division in 1962 and their first league title in 17 years in 1964. Liverpool won their first FA Cup in 1965, but they narrowly lost the European Cup Winners' Cup final to Borussia Dortmund in 1966. Under Shankly, the club achieved a remarkable League and UEFA Cup double in 1972-73 and continued to dominate in the following seasons.

1983 — 2001

Bob Paisley takes over

Shankly's successor, Bob Paisley, carried on the legacy, securing further successes, including three European Cups and numerous league titles. The club maintained its winning streak until the tragic Hillsborough disaster in 1989 when 96 fans lost their lives. This tragedy led to changes in stadium safety regulations. While Liverpool faced challenges in the late 1980s, the 1990s saw them bounce back under Kenny Dalglish's management and later under Gerard Houllier, achieving the treble in 2001.

Carrying on the legacy

Rafael Benítez's appointment in 2004 marked a significant turning point, with Liverpool winning the UEFA Champions League in 2005. The club changed ownership during the 2006-07 season. Despite a strong 2008-09 season, Liverpool could not clinch the Premier League title. The subsequent years saw various managerial changes, but it was under Jürgen Klopp's leadership that Liverpool achieved tremendous success, including winning the UEFA Champions League in 2019 and ending their 30-year Premier League title drought in the 2019-20 season. These events marked significant milestones in Liverpool F.C.'s storied history.
